When I saw what would be this week's lesson in Sunday school, I was tempted to skip it!
They ask us to study the lesson ahead of time each week, but no one ever does.
I just so happened to remember this week and it just so happens to be on Isaiah.
Elder Boyd K Packer said this about reading the Book of Mormon,
"Then,
just as you settle in to move comfortably along, you will meet a
barrier. The style of the language changes to Old Testament prophecy
style. For, interspersed in the narrative, are chapters reciting the
prophecies of the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. They loom as a barrier,
like a roadblock or a checkpoint beyond which the casual reader, one
with idle curiosity, generally will not go. You,
too, may be tempted to stop there, but do not do it! Do not stop
reading! Move forward through those difficult-to-understand chapters of
Old Testament prophecy, even if you understand very little of it."
So let's do it!
This week's lesson is in 2 Nephi chapters 11-25.
Here are some of my favorite verses from this week's reading
"And now I, Nephi, write more of the words of Isaiah, for my soul delighteth in his words..." 2 Nephi 11: 2
"Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him." 2 Nephi 11:4
"For if there be no Christ there be no God; and if there be no God we are not, for there could have been no creation. But there is a God, and he is Christ, and he cometh in the fulness of his own time." 2 Nephi 11:7
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, when the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it." 2 Nephi 12:2
"O house of Jacob, come ye and let us walk in the light of the Lord; yea, come, for ye have all gone astray, everyone to his wicked ways." 2 Nephi 12:5
"O ye wicked ones, enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for the fear of the Lord and the glory of his majesty shall smite thee." 2 Nephi 12:10
"And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low; and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day." 2 Nephi 12:17
"And I will give children unto them to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them." 2 Nephi 13:4
"For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen, because their tongues and their doings have been against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of his glory." 2 Nephi 13:8
"Moreover, the Lord saith: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched-forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet--" 2 Nephi 13:16
"And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and a covert from storm and from rain." 2 Nephi 14:6
"Therefore, my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.' 2 Nephi 15:13
"Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" 2 Nephi 15:20
"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said: Here am I; send me." 2 Nephi 16:8
"Then said I: Lord, how long? And he said; Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate;" 2 Nephi 16:11
"Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign--Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." 2 Nephi 17:14
"And when they shall say unto you: Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and mutter--should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead? To the law and to the testimony; and if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them," 2 Nephi 18:19-20
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." 2 Nephi 19:6
"For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return; the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness." 2 Nephi 20:22
"They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea." 2 Nephi 21:9
"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and song; he also has become my salvation." 2 Nephi 22:2
"Therefore shall all hands be faint, every man's heart shall melt;" 2 Nephi 23:7
"And it shall come to pass in that day the the Lord shall give thee rest, from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve." 2 Nephi 24:3
"How are thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! Art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!" 2 Nephi 24:12
"For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." 2 Nephi 25:23
"And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ ,we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins." 2 Nephi 25:26
"And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out." 2 Nephi 25:29
Overall Isaiah's prophecies are about Christ, our savior and redeemer. That is why, though they may be difficult to understand, they are so very important.
I know that Christ is our savior. He came to this earth and suffered our sins. He died and resurrected that we may live again. He is alive and will come again. Let us all prepare.
Thanks for studying with me. I hope to see you next time.
With love,
Erin
